IOM has been in Portugal since 1976.

Our WorkAs the leading inter-governmental organization promoting since 1951 humane and orderly migration, IOM plays a key role to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through different areas of intervention that connect both humanitarian assistance and sustainable development.

Migration Management includes the development of policy guidance for the field; the formulation of global strategies; standard-setting and quality control; and knowledge management relating to “mainstream” migration sectors, including labour and facilitated migration, migration and development, counter-trafficking, assisted voluntary return, migration health, assistance for vulnerable migrants, immigration and border management and overall capacity-building in migration management.
In this field, IOM Portugal is developing the following projects and activities:
- Assisted voluntary return and reintegration programme - ARVoRe
- Assistance to victims of trafficking in Portugal
- Rights without borders: cooperation for stregthening human rights in migrant detention
- GuardianXchange: Strengthening guardianship in the EU through capacity building, knowledge exchange and peer learning
