An effective management of labour migration is key to ensure that migration benefits both destination and origin countries as well as the migrants themselves. For that, it is vital that mechanisms for safe and regular migration are provided to the foreigner workers.

The project “Promoting well-managed labour migration to Portugal” co-financed by AMIF – Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund, SEF – Immigration and Borders Service and IEFP IP. – Institute for Employment and Vocational Training will work on the definition of an integrated plan that will ensure a good management of labour migration. For this, it will be crucial to bring together the needs of the labour market in Portugal and the creation of safe routes for the foreign workers. The Action will focus on:

  • Increasing the capacity of government authorities to design and implement labour migration schemes.
  • Strengthening collaboration with employers to meet their needs and foster ethical recruitment.
  • Improving the understanding of barriers to the integration of migrant workers at the local level, to inform future labour migration actions and foster integration.

Working directly with the most relevant stakeholders at central and local level in the Tourism and Agriculture sectors, the project will promote a broad and comprehensive consultation and capacity building process to address the challenges of labour recruitment and migrant’s integration processes in the Algarve and Alentejo regions, in partnership with the authorities in the countries of origin. This will be the basis for the proposal for safe labour migration schemes to be developed in the future.
