IOM welcomes the Portuguese Government's commitment to resettle refugees to Portugal

Lisbon, July 19, 2024 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) congratulates the Portuguese State for its commitment to resume resettlement activities to Portugal in collaboration with IOM Portugal, following a statement from the Council of Ministers on July 16.

“After many months of uncertainty, we are very pleased to see that the resumption of resettlement activities is in the near future” said Vasco Malta, IOM Portugal Head of Mission.

The Portuguese State reaffirms its commitment to international solidarity and the protection of human rights, committing to receive and integrate 600 refugees who initially requested asylum in Egypt and Turkey. This program is part of an ongoing effort that in recent years has seen the successful resettlement of hundreds of refugees. This joint effort aims to support individuals and families seeking safety and a new life in Portuguese territory.

IOM Portugal has played a crucial role in this process, offering assistance at various stages, including pre-medical health assessment, pre-departure orientation sessions and management of refugee’ movements. Furthermore, the IOM, in close collaboration with the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA), supports initial integration in Portugal, providing essential information and facilitating adaptation to the new context.
