The relocation of children who had been living in reception centers in Greece is being carried out in line with the children’s best interests and considers their international protection needs.
IOM organizes the flights, pre-departure orientation sessions and provides psychosocial support.
During the pre-departure orientation sessions, children are provided with information on what to expect during their flight, and upon arrival to Portugal, including the support they will receive during the first months, the type of accommodation they will stay at, their rights and obligations in the country and the access to educational and training opportunities. Furthermore, IOM conducts medical examinations to detect any medical condition of public health concern that requires a follow up after arrival as well as diagnostic tests for COVID-19.
Whenever necessary, IOM escorts the children during the flight from Greece and ensure a safe handover of the children to the responsible authorities at the airport in Lisbon.
